Morgan Tsvangirai Responds to Rumours of His Death: ‘I’m Not Dead!’
Leader of the opposition, Morgan Tsvangirai, has responded to rumours that he has died, saying that he is, in fact, still very much alive.
Rumours started doing the rounds on social media over the weekend that Tsvangirai had died of food poisoning. However, this was not the case, and Tsvangirai took to Twitter to confirm that he is still alive:
“…I hear there are morbid malicious rumours circulating that I am dead. Well, this tweet speaks for itself that I am very much alive,” he tweeted from his @mrtsvangirai account.
He currently has more than 35 000 followers on Twitter.
A small news website also ran a story that apparently “confirmed” that Tsvangirai had died. This added fuel to the rumour of his passing, and soon the news spread across social media like wildfire.
Tsvangirai has been the most prominent opposition leader in Zimbabwe in recent years. He founded the Movement for Democratic Change in Zimbabwe in 1999 and has gone up against President Robert Mugabe in three elections.
Tsvangirai was also diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016, for which he has received treatment in South Africa.
Tsvangirai’s spokesperson, Luke Tamborinyoka, said in a statement that Tsvangirai is in good health:
“…Zimbabweans should be [sic] rest assured that their leader is in good health. Today [Sunday] he will address a provincial council in Gwanda.”
