Miss SA Escapes Hijacking in Johannesburg
Miss South Africa 2017, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, narrowly escaped a hijacking in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening.
According to reports, the hijacking happened in the Hyde Park suburb of Johannesburg.
In a Facebook post published on the Official Miss South Africa page, the organisation said that three armed men approached Demi-Leigh’s car while she was on Jan Smuts Avenue.
According to the Miss SA organisation, the 21-year-old managed to exit her car and run away to safety. She was later picked up by a ‘good samaritan’ who drove her away from the scene. Her car and handbag were later recovered at the scene by a security company.
While Demi-Leigh has not publicly commented on the incident, the organisation said that she is unharmed but shaken by the traumatic event.
In response to the news of Miss South Africa’s hijacking, South African Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula, released a statement strongly condemning the incident, adding that “no resources will be spared in the fight against crime”.
He also called for increased action against crimes on women, saying that there is “not time to waste” when it comes to protecting the citizens and making sure criminals get prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
South Africa has seen a noticeable rise in violent crimes against women and girls in the last few months.
