Meghan Markle Visits Memorial to Slain South African Student

Meghan Markle visited the memorial to a murdered 19-year-old student on Saturday, 28 September, while travelling through South Africa with her husband, Prince Harry.

Markle made a personal visit to the post office in Claremont, a suburb in Cape Town, where she tied a ribbon – with a small message written in the local language of Xhosa – on the memorial to Uyinene Mrwetyana who violently lost her life last month.

The moment posted on the official Sussex Royal Instagram account, with the caption containing the memorial message: “ ‘Simi kunye kulesisimo’ – ‘We stand together in this moment’ “.

The post also said: “[Uyinene’s Mrwetyana’s] death has mobilized people across South Africa in the fight against gender based violence, and is seen as a critical point in the future of women’s rights in South Africa.”

The royal couple reportedly followed the tragic story and Markle made the private pilgrimage as a “personal gesture”.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are on an official 10-day trip to southern Africa, visiting areas of significance and meeting with various dignitaries.
