Mateus Fernandes Set to Join West Ham from Saints
West Ham United have secured the signing of Mateus Fernandes from Southampton in a deal worth approximately £38 million.
The 21-year-old midfielder already completed his medical in London earlier in the week, and is expected to finalise his contract within the next few days.
Fernandes was one of the few bright lights in Southampton’s dismal 2024/25 campaign, which ended in the side’s relegation to the English Football League Championship. Despite the Saints’ struggles, the Portuguese Under-21 international impressed with his composure in possession and ability to drive set-pieces from midfield.
Hammers manager Graham Potter has been under pressure following a poor start to the new season, including a heavy 5-1 loss to Chelsea at home. He has been eager to strengthen his centre field options, targeting both a defensive anchor and a more creative playmaker.
Fernandes is seen as the latter, with his versatility allowing him to drive the ball or play as a more attacking position.
The move marks one of West Ham’s biggest transfers in recent years and is regarded as a statement of intent. With the summer window closing soon, the club hopes Fernandes can provide the spark needed to change their season’s fortunes.
