Mata: United Still Have a Chance at Top Four Spot

May 09, 2017

Manchester United’s Spanish midfielder, Juan Mata, has said that he still has hopes for a top four finish for the Red Devils in the English Premier League.

Mata believes his team can still crack a spot in the top four despite losing to Arsenal 2-0 on Sunday.

“We have a really important chance to play Champions League through the Europa League but in the Premier League anything can happen. We will try to win our remaining games and maybe we [will finish] in the top four [sic],” Mata said.

While a top four finish in the EPL may seem a little bit of a stretch, United have another avenue to follow to make sure they secure themselves a spot in the Champions League.

Should United win the Europa League – in which they have been doing very well as of late – they will also secure a spot in the Champions League.

Mata admitted that winning the Europa League is, at this point, a greater priority for the team.

They next play Celta Vigo in the Europa League semi-final on Thursday at their home ground of Old Trafford.

“Now we play Celta Vigo and we need to focus on that from this moment,” he said

Manchester United are currently in fifth position in the English Premier League, four points behind rivals Manchester City, who are in fourth position.
