Man United and Spurs Inch Closer to Europa League Final
Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur both took significant steps towards reaching the Europa League final, with commanding first-leg victories in their respective semi-finals on Thursday, 1 May.
United impressed with a 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao, with Bruno Fernandes finding the back of the net twice. The result gives them a commanding advantage heading into next week’s second leg in England, where they are predicted with a 97% chance to progress.
Tottenham also seized control of their tie with a 3-1 home victory over Bodo/Glimt. Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, and Dominic Solanke were on target for Spurs, who now have a 91% chance of advancing to the final. Despite conceding a late goal, the Lillywhites remain confident ahead of the return leg in Norway.
An all-English final is now a real possibility, with both teams on track to face each other in Spain on 21 May. The winner will secure a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League, which is vital for both sides given their recent struggles in the English Premier League.
If successful, United or Spurs would also join five other English clubs in the prestigious competition next season.
