Man U to Reconfigure Goalkeeping Setup
Manchester United face a key decision regarding goalkeeping ahead of the 2026-27 season, and Senne Lammens finds himself under close scrutiny. Despite an impressive debut campaign, questions linger over whether the 24-year-old is ready to lead a title challenge.
Lammens joined United from Royal Antwerp for £18.1 million on deadline day last summer, quickly earning the starting role under interim-turned-permanent manager Michael Carrick. Keeping eight clean sheets in 32 English Premier League (EPL) appearances, the young Belgian helped United secure a third-place finish and a return to Champions League football.
However, a high-profile error in Belgium’s 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final loss to Spain has reignited debate. Former EPL winger Micky Gray warned during a recent interview that relying on a developing goalkeeper across domestic and European competitions is a “big ask,” urging United to seek a more experienced starter.
While United have brought in Karl Darlow as senior cover and reinforced their midfield with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, teammate Tom Heaton expressed confidence in Lammens’ mental strength to bounce back. The shot-stopper will also aim to impress new Belgium head coach Mark van Bommel following the international reset.
