Man City Win 3-0 Amid Financial Rules Drama
Manchester City’s first match since being found guilty of breaching the English Premier League’s (EPL) financial rules ended in a commanding 3-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday, 11 October.
Despite Reds fans at Anfield in Liverpool, England, calling out the visitors with “cheat” chants and banners, Enzo Maresca’s men were able to maintain their focus on the game at hand.
If anything, Liverpool – and their rowdy supporters by extension – received their comeuppance in the 62nd minute when Ryan Gravenberch was sent off the pitch after receiving a second yellow for a challenge on City’s Jeremy Doku.
Three minutes later, the Citizens began piling on the goals: Erling Haaland blasted the opener, followed by Doku’s stunning second in the 68th minute and Rayan Cherki’s brilliant third in the 78th minute.
There is no doubt that this is a massive victory and self-esteem boost for City, who were found guilty last month on 114 charges of breaching the EPL’s Financial Fair Play rules.
While no sanction has been imposed as of yet, City face the threat of a heavy points deduction or, in the worst case, expulsion from the English top flight.
