Mali Attack: Special Forces Arrest Suspect

July 27, 2016

The Malian government has announced that their military’s special forces division has arrested a man suspected to have been behind the recent attack on a military base that killed 17 soldiers and left several others wounded.

Mahmoud Barry is the man in question and is reportedly a senior member of the jihadi terror group, Ansar Dine.

It is believed that Barry planned the attack on the military base.

“…Today, at around 16:00 (16:00 GMT) our special forces captured Mahmoud Barry, alias Abou Yehiya,” the special forces said in a statement released yesterday.

Other security sources also confirmed the arrest of BArry, saying that he has been in charge of Ansar Dine’s Macina combat unit.

It is also believed that Barry was behind several other attacks on Malian security forces over the past year.

Since Mali declared a 10-day state of emergency since the attack, special forces had been working non-stop to track down the people responsible for the attack.

“…For several days, Mali’s special forces and intelligence services have been searching for the individual in the area,” the security forces said.

Barry will now be transferred to Bamako, the capital city.
