Mail Finally Delivered to West Bank After 8 Years
Palestinian postal service employees are working overtime to sift through over 10 tonnes of letters and parcels that have piled up for the past eight years due to the block imposed by Israel, officials said on Tuesday.
The post, dating from 2010 to this year, had been blocked by Israel authorities from entering the West Bank via Jordan for safety reasons, but were recently released on a one-time deal, the officials stated.
It was discovered by employees at the sorting center in the occupied West Bank city of Jericho that the packages contain a wide range of items: from lettered envelopes to medication and even wheelchairs for the handicapped.
Sorting centre official, Ramadan Ghazawi, said it would take his staff another two weeks to sort through the backlog and deliver all the post.
Some items have been broken, and Ghazawi said that a notice stating that goods were received as is from Israeli authorities would be sent to avoid complaints.
