Maguire’s Late Header Deepens Liverpool’s Growing Crisis
Harry Maguire’s towering late header sealed a dramatic 2-1 win for Manchester United on Sunday, 19 October, ending their nine-year wait for victory on Merseyside soil and plunging Liverpool into their worst run of form in over a decade.
Man United midfielder Bryan Mbeumo stunned the crowd at Anfield Stadium in Liverpool, England, within two minutes of the first whistle, firing in right after Alexis Mac Allister suffered a head injury that left the hosts furious that play was not stopped by referee Michael Oliver.
Reds forward Cody Gakpo struck the woodwork three times before finally equalising at the 78-minute mark, only for Maguire to nod in Bruno Fernandes’s cross six minutes from stoppage time.
Liverpool’s finishing woes continue as Mohamed Salah’s goal drought has now stretched to seven league matches.
“We had more than enough chances to score,” admitted Reds manager Arne Slot, who conceded that losing four in a row was “a challenge” but insisted his side’s confidence remained intact.
For United, the result marked a turning point under manager Ruben Amorim, who praised his team’s “spirit” but urged calm: “It’s three points but… this doesn’t change anything.”
The result lifts United to ninth place on the English Premier League table with 13 points, just two points behind the Reds, who have dropped to fourth place.
