Maddison Injury Sours Son’s Emotional Spurs Send-Off

Tottenham’s pre-season preparations were dealt a major blow after James Maddison suffered a suspected knee injury during their 1-1 draw with Newcastle United on Sunday, 3 August.

The 28-year-old midfielder – who was introduced in the 75th minute – lasted just nine minutes before leaving the pitch on a stretcher at Seoul World Cup Stadium in Seoul, South Korea.

It is feared Maddison has aggravated the same knee issue that kept him out of the closing stages of last season, including Spurs’ Europa League final victory. Head coach Thomas Frank described the situation as “a bad injury” whilst adding: “Sometimes in life and football things can be both beautiful and brutal.”

The incident overshadowed what was expected to be Heung-Min Son’s final appearance for the Lilywhites. The South Korean forward, captain on the day, received a standing ovation from his home fans and a guard of honour when he was substituted in the second half.

Son, who has scored 173 goals in 454 appearances for the club, said: “Spurs will always be in my heart… I can only think about the beautiful moments.”

In a further twist, Spurs confirmed the loan signing of Portugal midfielder Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich as they brace for another injury-hit start to the season.
