Luis Enrique Throws in the Towel as Spain Coach
After barely a month at the helm, Luis Enrique quit as coach for the Spanish national football team on Wednesday, 19 June, citing “personal reasons” for his stepping down.
According to Spanish football federation (RFEF) president, Luis Rubiales, Enrique resigned for “family matters of an urgent nature.”
Enrique had temporarily stepped aside from his official duties in March for personal reasons.
He said: “Owing to the fact that the circumstances which have prevented me from carrying out my role as coach since March continue today, I have decided to leave the role.”
The former midfielder added: “I also want to especially thank all members of staff and players for their professionalism, and the media for showing discretion and respect for the situation.”
The 49-year-old Spaniard left his assistant, Roberto Moreno, in charge of the Red Fury – leaving the job just 11 months after signing a two-year contract with the team in July 2018.
