Local Stars Mourn Death of SA Kwaito Legend Mandoza
Dozens of local Zimbabwean celebrities expressed their sadness over the death of groundbreaking South African Kwaito musician, Mandoza, over the past few days.
Mandoza – who became an instant superstar following the release of his hit song, ‘Nkalakatha’ back in 2000 – was one of the pioneers of South Africa’s budding Kwaito music scene. He was also one of the artists responsible for allowing Kwaito music to reach a broader audience.
He passed away from brain cancer on September 18.
Local DJ, DJ Stavo, who had collaborated with the South African superstar only three years ago, expressed his sadness over the death of Mandoza and paid tribute to the artist via a post on Instagram:
“I am saddened to hear of the passing of the legendary #Mandoza. He was a true legend and really inspired me. Your music will play on forever. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.”
Zimbabwean dancehall star, who is now based in South Africa, Buffalo Soul Jah, also shared his appreciation for the Kwaito star and the devastation over his death:
“RIP to the great Kwaito star #Mandoza. I was privileged to share the stage with you once in Bulawayo two years back. You made kwaito cool even to white people. May your soul rest in peace and your music live forever,” he said on his Instagram page.
