Local films propel the SA box office
Local films have propelled the South African box office to a 43% increase according to the latest South African Box Office report.
According to the report, South African cinemas made R33-million for the first half of 2014 and 12 out of the 111 films that were released between January 3 and June 12, 2014 were local movies.
The top earning local film was Pad Na Jou Hart, which accumulated a whopping R11-million.
International movies were still the main money-makers as top earner went to The Amazing Spider Man 2 which grossed R21.8-million followed by animated hit Rio 2 with R21.1-million, and X-Men: Days of Future Past came in third with R16.9-million.
Animation films were the highest grossing genre with R72-million, while action/adventure came in second with R70-million, followed by Drama with R59-million.
