Liverpool’s Woes Worsen after Matip Injury
Liverpool have received a huge setback after defender Joel Matip fractured his collarbone during the club’s 1-0 victory over Napoli on Tuesday, 11 December.
The 27-year-old German player sustained the injury during the final minutes of the game, when he landed awkwardly after an aerial collision.
In a statement posted by the Reds, Matip was taken to hospital after the game, where an assessment revealed that he would require surgery.
Regarding his recovery time, the club said: “Early indications suggest the centre-back is facing a spell of up to six weeks out of action, though that is dependent on how Matip responds to his treatment and rehabilitation programmes.”
Matip’s injury comes as a blow to Jurgen Klopp’s team, given that his fellow defender, Joe Gomez, has also been sidelined for six weeks due to a leg-related injury. Right back Trent Alexander-Arnold also looks in doubt after injuring his foot during Tuesday’s game.
