Liverpool’s Mane Surprised by Red Card

September 14, 2017

Sadio Mane has expressed surprise that he was given a red card in Liverpool’s Premier League match against Manchester City on Saturday.

The Senegalese international was sent off by referee Jon Moss after he kicked Manchester City’s goalkeeper, Ederson Moraes, in the face.

Ederson needed eight minutes of medical treatment on the field before being carried off on a stretcher.

Mane has insisted that the kick was accidental, and that he “was expecting a yellow card”.

The 25-year-old explained: “I was going for the ball and I didn’t have the intention to hurt him because I’m not that kind of player. I wish him a quick recovery.”

A photograph has since been released, showing the extent of Ederson’s injuries – a gash on his cheek which required eight stitches.

Liverpool, who lost the match 0-5, appealed the ban that comes with a red card, however the Football Association has decided to uphold it.

This means that the striker will miss three matches: the Reds’ match against Burnley on Saturday, as well as their two upcoming clashes with Leicester City.

Ederson has returned to training, wearing a protective helmet to cover his wounds.
