Liverpool’s Lovren Accuses Lukaku
Liverpool defender, Dejan Lovren, has accused Manchester United’s striker, Romelu Lukaku, of intentionally kicking him in the face.
The incident occurred when Lovren was on the ground after a tackle during the goalless draw between the rival clubs on Saturday. Lukaku appeared to catch the Croatian international in the face with a stray boot.
Lovren covered his face and rolled around on the ground in pain, but referee Martin Atkinson judged the contact to be accidental, and did not issue Lukaku with a yellow card.
Lovren has insisted that the “stamp” was intentional: “[M]y honest view was he did it on purpose. Even if he didn’t do it [on purpose], he would usually apologise”.
Media reports have speculated that the Belgian international may have been playing aggressively due to frustration. Lukaku appeared to grow increasingly anxious over his isolated role and lack of support during the game at Anfield.
The 24-year-old also completely wiped out Liverpool defender, Joe Gomez, during a tackle.
The Football Association has sided with the referee, and have decided against pursuing a case of violent conduct against Lukaku.
