Liverpool Star Sends Egypt to World Cup

October 09, 2017

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is a national hero after he scored two goals against the Congo on Sunday, securing Egypt a place in next year’s FIFA World Cup.

This is only the third time Egypt has qualified to compete for the gold trophy, and the first time in over 25 years – they last qualified in 1990.

The Pharaohs, Egypt’s national team, went into their penultimate Group E game knowing that a win against the Congo would secure them a place, after Uganda drew with Ghana on Saturday night.

Salah scored his first goal of the match during the second half, but Arnold Bouka-Moutou equalised for the Congo shortly after.

In the 95th minute of the game, during five minutes of stoppage time, Egypt were awarded a penalty.

Salah sent the Congo keeper the wrong way, scoring a winning goal that sparked cheers throughout the stands and across the country.

Wild scenes of celebration ensured as several players and fans took to the field, while other supporters wept with joy in the packed stands.

Salah was near-tears after clinching the winning penalty.

Meanwhile, Ghana has appealed to FIFA for a replay with Uganda, citing unfair refereeing. While it stands a slim chance of being granted, if the rematch is given the green light, this would put Egypt’s qualification in jeopardy.
