Liverpool Slams Racist Origi Banner
Liverpool have strongly condemned an obscene and racist banner depicting striker Divock Origi, which was displayed during the club’s UEFA Champions League (UCL) clash against Belgium’s KRC Genk on Wednesday, 23 October.
The banner – showing Origi’s head superimposed onto a man’s nude body, which stands next to the UCL trophy – was unfurled in the away section at Luminus Arena in the city of Genk.
The 24-year-old Belgian previously played for Genk in his youth from 2001 to 2010.
According to reports, Liverpool was made aware of the banner’s presence before kick-off, and they promptly had it removed.
Soon after they downed Genk 4-1, the Reds released a statement in which they expressed their disapproval over the banner.
They said: “To be clear, the image used perpetuated a racist stereotype. This is completely unacceptable. We acted swiftly to have the banner removed, and we are now working with the local authorities and stadium team in Genk to identify those responsible.”
