Liverpool Slammed for Losing to Bottom-of-Log Wolves
Liverpool shocked fans and critics alike after their 2-1 defeat to bottom-placed Wolves on Tuesday, 3 March, but none had harsher words than Reds legend Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard singled out the lack of attacking quality and defensive lapses, describing the first half as a “complete waste.”
Talking to a local publication, the 45-year-old former midfielder decried his former club’s performance: “For 65 minutes, Liverpool were desperate tonight, really poor, didn’t create enough, didn’t play at the right speed or the right tempo, didn’t have enough quality.”
Gerrard also called on manager Arne Slot to start 17-year-old sensation Rio Ngumoha in their Football Association Cup rematch on Friday, 6 March. The younger’s impactful cameo, which included hitting the post, stood in stark contrast to that of Cody Gakpo, who struggled to influence the game.
Defensively, Gerrard questioned the awareness of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate during Wolves’ first goal in the 78th minute, and criticized the lack of urgency following an Alisson Becker error for the second.
The defeat leaves Liverpool fifth on the English Premier League table, facing a congested schedule with UEFA Champions League qualification hanging in the balance. The Reds must now find a winning formula before hosting Tottenham Hotspur next Sunday, 15 March.
