Liverpool Secure £60m Deal for Rennes Star Jeremy Jacquet
Liverpool have reached a verbal agreement to sign Rennes’ breakout defender Jeremy Jacquet in a deal worth up to £60 million.
The Reds will pay an initial £55 million, with an additional £5 million in performance-related add-ons. Although the 20-year-old is undergoing a medical on deadline day, Monday 2 February, he will remain in France until the summer.
The Merseyside club moved aggressively to secure the France Under-21 international, successfully hijacking interest from Chelsea. While the London club matched the financial offer, Jacquet opted for Anfield to avoid Chelsea’s heavily populated defensive ranks.
With Ibrahima Konate’s contract expiring this summer and injuries to Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni, Liverpool offer a more direct pathway to first-team football.
This move follows Liverpool’s frustration in previous windows after missing out on Marc Guehi.
Experts believe the investment is justified, with French football specialist Julien Laurens noting: “He reminds me of when William Saliba burst onto the scene in France with Saint-Etienne, or Wesley Fofana.” Laurens added, “You can’t get it wrong. He is going to be amazing.”
