Liverpool Chase Micky van de Ven Amidst Defence Woes

January 22, 2026

Liverpool have identified Tottenham Hotspur’s Micky van de Ven as a primary long-term target to solve their deepening defensive struggles.

Despite winning the English Premier League (EPL) last season, the Reds have struggled this term, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate failing to replicate their best performances.

The need for reinforcements is dire: homegrown talent Jarell Quansah was recently sold, and his replacement, teenager Giovanni Leoni, suffered a season-ending knee injury on his debut. With Konate’s contract expiring mid-year and no major defensive signing since 2021, manager Arne Slot is under pressure to bolster the backline.

“I think everyone is aligned about the challenges we are facing,” he said during a recent interview with a football publication.

Van de Ven, valued at approximately £78 million, has resisted Tottenham’s attempts to extend his contract beyond 2029. Spurs’ recent slump to 14th place in the EPL rankings could leave Thomas Frank struggling to prevent the 24-year-old Dutchman from seeking greener pastures.

Liverpool face stiff competition from Real Madrid, who are also monitoring the star centre-back as they look to replace older players. While a January move remains unlikely, the Reds appear ready to secure the elite pace and recovery skills Van de Ven provides.
