Liverpool Blames FA for Carabao Cup Expulsion
Liverpool are at risk of being fined or eliminated from the Carabao Cup this season after allegedly fielding an ineligible player in their 2-0 win against MK Dons on Wednesday, 25 September.
The 22-year-old, Pedro Chirivella, who returned to Anfield from a loan spell in Spain was included in the team, however, he is said to have not met the registration criteria as he didn’t receive an International Transfer Certificate.
The EFL has opened an investigation against the Reds and if it’s found that Liverpool did indeed breach rules, then they could be kicked out of the competition, reprimanded or face a hefty fine.
Liverpool blames this administrative oversight on the Football Association (FA), claiming that they had applied for an international transfer certificate for the midfielder in July, which they will use in mitigation to try to prevent being thrown out of the competition.
However, the FA rules stipulates that it is each club’s responsibility to make sure their players are registered before fielding them.
Liverpool released an official statement saying: “The club are aware of a potential administrative issue pertaining to one of our players. We are working with the relevant authorities in order to establish the facts of the matter and will be making no further comment until this process is complete.”
