Lionel Messi Wins Ballon d’Or

Barcelona football star, Lionel Messi, won the prestigious Ballon d’Or Award last night at a glittering ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland.

This is the fifth time Messi has won the Ballon d’Or award. He was nominated for the prestigious award alongside fellow Barcelona player, Neymar as well as his arch rival and Real Madrid star, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi said that it felt incredible to be nominated again and win. The past two years, Ronaldo was the recipient of the award:

“…It’s a very special moment to come back, to get a Ballon d’Or again after the two years in which Cristiano Ronaldo won each time…it is incredible that it’s my fifth. This Ballon d’Or means more than I could have ever dreamed of as a child,” he said.

The final scores showed that Messi got 41 percent of the vote, Ronaldo getting 28 percent and Neymar 8 percent.
