Libya: US Stealth Bombers Kill More Than 80 ISIS Fighters

January 20, 2017

US Defense Secretary, Ashton Carter, announced on Thursday that at least 80 ISIS fighters have been killed in a US-led air strike in Libya.

The airstrikes targeted ISIS training camps in the African country. Carter also confirmed that the jihadists that had been killed were involved in plotting various attacks in Europe.

Carter said of the jihadists:

“…[they] are people who were actively plotting operations in Europe, and may also have been connected with some attacks that have already occurred in Europe [sic],”.

The US military sent two of their highly technical B-2 stealth bombers on the 34-hour mission to Africa. These planes are often used in stealth missions, thanks to their bat-like shape and technical prowess.

The B-2 planes were accompanied by Reaper drones.

These drones are said to have released more than 100 bombs on the training camp.

A spokesperson for the Pentagon said that the strike was fully supported by the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) and was authorised by outgoing US president, Barack Obama.

The Pentagon also said that no civilians have been killed and that there were no women or children present at the training camp at the time of the attack.
