Libya: Government Announces Strict COVID-19 Curfew
The government of Libya has imposed an immediate curfew in an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
The conflict-ridden north African nation has struggled with the effects of COVID-19 within its borders, and the UN-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) – based in the capital of Tripoli – announced on Wednesday, 26 August, that a nation-wide, four-day curfew will be in effect.
The declaration will only affect those areas under the GNA’s control, primarily western Libya.
Measures include the banning of public gatherings, and all religious and national festivals will be on hold until the curfew is lifted. This will also include partial lockdowns between 9PM and 6AM local time.
Ever since the country experienced the NATO-backed toppling of longtime dictator, Muammar Gaddafi, in 2011, it has endured a tumultuous life since then.
Libya currently has 11 834 active cases of COVID-19, and 210 citizens have lost their lives so far.
