Liberia Takes Over Security From UN
Liberia has taken over responsibility for its own security across the country for the first time in over 13 years. Previously, Liberia’s security was dependant on the United Nations.
Since the civil war ended in the west African country 13 years ago, the United Nations’ peacekeeping force was in charge of the security of the country.
However, now the country would solely be responsible for its own security.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, has said that he is pleased with the move.
Official security responsibility was transferred from the UN peacekeeping forces to the Liberian government and president.
On Friday, president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf will officially mark the handover.
While most of the Un forces will retreat out of the country, the UN did confirm that around 1200 troops will remain in the country in a supporting role.
The first peacekeeping force was deployed to Liberia by the UN in 2003. This was to help stabilise the shaken country after a civil war of four years which took the lives of around 250 000 people.
