The former prime minister of Lesotho and his third wife allegedly paid assassins a huge sum of money to kill Lipolelo Thabane, according to a police affidavit released on Wednesday, 10 June.
In June 2017, Ms Thabane, 58 – who divorced Thomas Thabane in 2012 – was shot dead while driving to her home in Maseru.
The murder occurred two days before her ex-husband’s inauguration.
Per the affidavit, the 81-year-old former minister – who denies involvement in the killing – and his third wife, Maesaiah – the latter who is currently in custody for murder – allegedly forwarded a down payment of $23 931 to assassins who were to kill Ms Thabane “so that [Maesaiah] could assume the position of First Lady.”
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Paseka Mokete, said: “They would be remunerated in cash [totalling $179 485] … and through employment opportunities, should they carry out the murder of the deceased prior to [Thabane’s] inauguration as prime minister.”
One of the co-conspirators of the assassination plot is reportedly helping prosecutors in their murder investigation.
