Leicester, Leeds Officially Relegated with Southampton

May 29, 2023

Leicester City, Leeds United and Southampton have all officially been relegated from the English Premier League (EPL) after a dismal 2022-2023 season.

All three teams had their final matches of the season on Sunday, 28 May, in England alongside Everton, who had also been at risk but were able to claw their way back into the league with a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth at Goodison Park Stadium in Liverpool.

Leeds lost their footing in the EPL with an embarrassing 4-1 home thrashing from Tottenham Hotspurs at Elland Road Stadium in Leeds. To add to the humiliation, a fuming United fan reportedly tossed forward Georginio Rutter’s shirt back onto the field after he had thrown it into the crowd.

Leicester battled valiantly against West Ham United at King Power Stadium in Leicester, but their 2-1 victory was simply too little, too late to keep them in the prestigious selection.

“Leicester will be the most expensive squad, with the highest wage bill, to be relegated in Premier League history,” Kieran Maguire, a sport finance expert, said during an interview after their match.

Southampton – who knew their fate well before Sunday – did their best to make sure their final EPL match was played in style, reaching a 4-4 draw with Liverpool at Saint Mary’s Stadium in Southampton.
