Landslides in Rwanda Kill 20
According to various reports, at least 20 people have been killed in Rwanda, due to landslides that have ripped through the country.
Torrential rainstorms in the northern parts of the country has had devastating effects on the area. Homes that were situated on hills and valleys have almost completely been destroyed by the landslides.
According to the Disaster Management Ministry of Rwanda, most of the people that have been killed by the landslides are children.
They did not specify exactly how many out of the supposed 20 victims were children.
The ministry has also called this a ‘catastrophe’, saying that this year has been increasingly bad when it comes to landslides:
“… [sic] Up until now we have counted at least 20 dead in landslides that buried houses in the district of Gakenke…Most of the victims were children…It’s a huge catastrophe,” a spokesperson for the ministry said.
Rwanda is no stranger to landslides. The country is often hit by devastating landslides during its rainy season, but officials say that this season has been one of the worst the country has had to face.
There have been approximately 67 people killed between January and April of this year in Rwanda due to landslides. That number is also expected to rise as conditions worsen.
The Rwandan ministry also blamed the extreme rains on the weather phenomenon, El Nino, which has had damaging effects all over the world.
In Kenya, the heavy rainstorms also wrecked havoc, as it caused a six-story building to collapse, killing more than 20 people last week.
