Kidnapped Tanzanian Tycoon Returns Home
Tanzanian billionaire Mohammed Dewji has returned home after being kidnapped earlier this month.
Dewji – the 43-year-old CEO of the METL Group and Africa’s youngest billionaire – was abducted outside the Colosseum Hotel on 11 October in Dar es Salaam, as he arrived there for a morning workout.
In a statement posted on Saturday, 20 October, on the METL Group’s Twitter account, Dewji confirmed the news of his release.
He said: “I thank Allah that I have returned home safely. I thank all my fellow Tanzanians, and everyone around the world for their prayers. I thank the authorities of Tanzania, including the Police Force for working for my safe return.”
According to Dar es Salaam Regional Police Chief, Lazaro Mambosasa, the tycoon was dumped at a field on Saturday morning near the Gymkhana Club.
He had bruises on his hands and feet from being tied up by his kidnappers, who are suspected to be South African mercenaries because he said they were “communicating in one of the vernacular from that country”.
An investigation into the kidnapping is currently underway.
