Kereke Says He Can’t Afford Legal Fees
Bikita West Zanu PF Minister, Munyaradzi Kereke, who has been accused of rape and sexual assault on two minor girls, has announced that he can no longer afford his legal fees in his ongoing court battle.
Kereke’s trial has been postponed until the 3rd of February, but he has now said that he cannot afford to pay his legal team anymore.
Kereke told the constitutional court that he can no longer afford his legal fees because the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) allegedly garnished his accounts.
“…[sic] All my financial sources have been garnished by Zimra to a point where I am unable to pay the upfront fees for the senior counsel,” he told the court.
Furthermore, Kereke went on to blame the state of his finances on Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) boss, Happyton Bonyongwe and his wife Willia, who chairs Zimra. He alleged that they are also busy with underhanded business with jailed Chinese businessmen.
In addition, he said that he had reported a criminal case against the couple and that he had urged police to investigate them as they allegedly planned to sell Fidelity Printers for $12 million to the Chinese businessman.
Kereke’s lawyer, James Makiya, renounced agency in a Constitutional Court application where he is challenging the constitutionality of private prosecution. He had applied to have the application postponed indefinitely and the Constitutional Court allowed his application but then added extra costs.
