Kereke Rape Trial Postponed To February 3rd
Munyaradzi Kereke, the Zanu PF legislator for Bikita West, has had his rape and sexual assault trial postponed until the 3rd of February.
The trial will resume in open court, after the victims of the assault – who are minors – finished testifying in camera yesterday afternoon.
Kereke is pleading not guilty on three charges; two of rape of his wife’s nieces and another of indecent assault.
The attacks allegedly happened 5 years ago, when the victims were 10 and 15 at the time.
Kereke has also tried to withdraw evidence – n the form of hospital records that confirm that rape had happened – from the court, but magistrate Noel Mupeiwa denied the application to withdraw the evidence.
“…[sic] Whether this document implicates the accused person or not is a determination that this court will have to make…The court already made a ruling and parties cannot be made to go back and revise their conduct simply because the defence seem to have perceived their errors,” he ruled.
The medical record was obtained from Harare Central Hospital.
if convicted, Kereke can face up to 20 years in jail.
