Kenyan Teen Shot Dead by Police
An investigation is underway after a 13-year-old boy was shot dead by police officers in Nairobi, Kenya.
The east African country is currently undergoing a dusk-to-dawn curfew in a bid to prevent the spread of the global coronavirus pandemic.
Per reports, the teenager – identified as Yassin Hussein Moyo – was playing on the balcony of his parent’s house in a Kiamaiko neighbourhood slum on Monday evening, 31 March, when the incident occurred.
To enforce the curfew, the police arrived at the slum, beating and firing – with live ammunition – on residents. Moyo was then shot in the stomach by a stray bullet.
The wounded teenager was quickly transported to a local hospital, but he soon succumbed to the injury.
He was buried at the Kariokor Muslim Cemetery the next day. His extended family, as well as dozens of young people from the neighbourhood, attended the funeral proceedings.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority issued a statement condemning the shooting, and said it had launched an investigation into finding the officer who killed Moyo.
