Kenyan Mall Massacre: 2 Men Found Guilty

October 08, 2020

Two men have been found guilty by a Kenyan court for assisting in an attack on a Nairobi mall in September 2013.

Per reports, Mohamed Ahmed Abdi and Hussein Hassan Mustafah aided four gunmen – who were members of the Somalia-based Islamist group, Al-Shabaab – in laying siege to the Westgate Shopping Mall for four days.

From throwing grenades to opening fire on shoppers, the gunmen killed 67 people and wounded 175 others. Ultimately, they were killed by Kenyan security forces.

Appearing in court on Wednesday, 7 October, Abdi and Mustafah – who were charged with conspiring with the perpetrators and supporting terrorist elements – were found guilty by Magistrate Francis Andayi.

A third suspect, Liban Abdullah Omar, was acquitted by Andayi of all charges. A fourth, Adan Dheq, was released last year due to a lack of evidence.

Abdi and Mustafah will be sentenced on 22 October, and are expected to face up to 20 years in prison.
