Kenya: Remains of Plane Crash Victims Return Home
The remains of 32 Kenyans who died in the Ethiopian Airlines plane crash seven months ago have been returned to the country.
In March, Ethiopian Airlines flight ET 302 was scheduled to fly from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to Nairobi, Kenya, when it crashed into a field just six minutes into its flight. All 149 passengers and eight crew members were killed.
Extensive DNA tests were carried out to identify the bodies, which were severely damaged beyond recognition.
Per reports, specialised caskets containing the remains of the Kenyan victims arrived on Monday morning, 14 October, at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.
Family members and friends of the deceased gathered at the airport’s VIP terminal to receive the remains and partake in a mass held in their honour.
Meanwhile, Boeing – who designed the crashed aircraft – has reportedly offered the Kenyan families a $100 million compensation package, but 15 families have rejected the offer on advice from their lawyers.
Negotiations around compensation are set to continue.
