Kenya: Police Seize $20 Million in Fake Banknotes
Six people have been arrested after police officers seized more than $20 million in counterfeit currency from a bank in Nairobi, Kenya.
According to a statement released via Twitter on Tuesday, 19 March, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that the fraudulent notes were recovered from a safe room at Barclay Bank’s Queensway branch.
George Kinoti, head of the DCI, later clarified that the fake money was found stashed in a client’s safe deposit box.
Six individuals – including the alleged owner of the box, and two bank officials – have been arrested. Wearing bags and coats over their faces to conceal their identities, they were escorted out of the bank by the police.
Barclays Bank issued a statement, in which they said that they were cooperating with the Kenyan police in their investigation.
