Kenya: Poachers Kill 2 White Giraffes
The bones of two rare white giraffes killed by poachers in north-eastern Kenya have been discovered.
In 2017, a female giraffe and her calf – both possessing white hides – were discovered roaming the grounds of the Ishaqbini Hirola Conservancy in Ijara, Garissa County.
Last August, the female gave birth to another white calf. They were last seen over three months ago.
According to reports, the skeletal remains of the female and her calf were found in a village in Garissa County on Monday, 10 March. It is believed that they were killed by armed poachers, and that the remains had been lying in the village for at least four months.
Only one white giraffe – a bull – remains. He is believed to be the last of his kind in the world.
Mohammed Ahmednoor, the manager of the conservancy, said: “This is a very sad day for the community of Ijara and Kenya as a whole … [the giraffes’] killing is a blow to the tremendous steps taken by the community to conserve rare and unique species and a wake-up call for continued support to conservation efforts.”
