January 18, 2019

A group of bomb disposal experts have managed to find and safely detonate a bomb left over from an extremist attack on a hotel and office complex in Nairobi, Kenya.

Five gunmen – believed to be members of the Somalia-based Islamist group, Al-Shabaab, who claimed responsibility for the attack – stormed the DusitD2 complex on Tuesday, 15 January.

More than 700 citizens were rescued, but 21 individuals lost their lives in the attack. One of the assailants was caught on CCTV footage lingering in front of the terrace of the Secret Garden restaurant before blowing himself up.

Per media reports, Kenyan bomb disposal experts swept the complex on Thursday, 17 January, in search of explosives or other dangerous weapons.

The Kenyan police tweeted out: “So far, one explosive has been found and taken for detonation in a safe area. This is to caution members of the public not to panic should they hear a blast since it will be a safe blast.”

The police continue to investigate in the aftermath of the attack.
