Karl Lagerfeld’s Cat “an Heiress” to Fashionista’s Fortune
A cat belonging to late German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld is reportedly set to inherit a vast chunk of her owner’s estimated $200 million fortune.
Lagerfeld – who served as the creative director of the French fashion house, Chanel – passed away on Tuesday, 19 February, at the age of 85, due to complications from pancreatic cancer.
In a magazine interview last year, the fashion icon said that his pet cat, Choupette – a Birman cat whom he adopted in 2011 – would be left a large portion of his multi-million dollar fortune.
He said: “[Choupette] has her own little fortune, she’s an heiress.”
Under French law, it is illegal to bequeath one’s pet money, but Lagerfeld’s German citizenship could provide a loophole: if Choupette was nominated as the designer’s “heir” through an association or foundation, she would be eligible to inherit his money.
While this revelation could be a cause for a catfight, Lagerfeld also mentioned in the interview that others are also named in his will. This could potentially include his long-time personal assistant and bodyguard, Sebastien Jondeau.
