Kallis backs Biff in divorce spat

May 11, 2015

Former Proteas star Jacques Kallis has come to fellow cricketer Graeme Smith’s defence regarding his divorce, insisting that many of the media reports are one-sided with "many of the facts" being "completely incorrect."

In a statement posted by the former South African cricketer on his Twitter account, Kallis – a good friend of Smith’s – dishes out on the privacy of the divorce saying: "Graeme and Morgan’s impending divorce became public news about three months ago, but I hope for both of their sakes that it does not remain public."

"I sincerely hope that both of them can behave in a private and dignified manner going forward for the sake of their children and not comment on the breakdown of the marriage, its causes and what has happened since the announcement was made public."

Kallis revealed that "it has been difficult" for Graeme’s colleagues to see what the media is saying about him.

"Many of the false accusations have irritated me, but the one that really makes me angry is that he is accused of going to the World Cup in Australia to be with his mates instead of his family."

Kallis goes on to defend Smith against the "false accusations" saying that Smith "has always provided for Morgan and their children."

"Those of us who know him well, know that he is a dedicated father, a good friend, generous to a fault and one of the most decent men you could ever meet."

The Star reported that Kallis’ statement comes a few days after Press Ombudsman, Johan Retief, ordered that The Sunday Times "apologise to Smith" for their March 8 article which, according to The Star, accused Smith of lying to his wife, telling her via an SMS that he wants a divorce and of his "secret divorce plan".
