Jolie, Hart slammed in Sony mails

December 12, 2014

As you may have heard, Sony was recently hacked and lots of behind-the-scenes information regarding their film studio has been leaked online. Here are five noteworthy things that have so far been revealed by the hack.

1.  Sony employees are tired of Adam Sandler

It seems that the employees of Sony are sick and tired of Adam Sandler’s films as they find them "mundane and formulaic", Gawker reported.  According to the website, the Sony hackers released a text file containing employee feedback with many complaining about Sandler’s films. Check out some of the employee complaints below:

"There is a general "blah-ness" to the films we produce. Althought we manage to produce an innovative film once in awhile, Social Network, Moneyball, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, we continue to be saddled with the mundane, formulaic Adam Sandler films."

"There are a lot of term deal personnel as well as creative personnel, yet we only release a dozen or so Columbia Pictures a year, for example. And will we still be paying for Adam Sandler? Why?"

"…the studio needs to change deal structure that has been in place with Happy Madison, as this arrangement has disproportionately benefitted Adam Sandler and his team."

2.  Kevin Hart is a "whore"

defamer.gawker.com reported an emailed message between Amy Pascal (co-chairman of Sony Pictures entertainment), Clint Culpepper (Studio exec.) and Michael Lynton (CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment) where actor/comedian Kevin Hart asked for more money from Sony as they wanted him to do a 140-character statement about his new movie on social media.

In the email message, Culpepper remarked the following about Hart: "I’m not saying he’s a whore, but he’s a whore." To view the full email conversation click here.

3.  Angelina Jolie is a "spoilt brat"

The defamer.gawker blog also posted an email message between film producer Scott Rudin and Pascal in which Rudin called Angelina Jolie "minimally talented spoiled brat". Why?

4.  Because it has something to do with the ‘Steve Jobs’ movie that Sony intended to produce.

Yes, Sony was producing a Steve Jobs film, but are not anymore and Jolie had something to do with this, it would seem. According to the email messages posted by the blog, Sony had David Fincher tapped to direct the film, but Jolie wanted Fincher to direct her in a Cleopatra film instead. Rudin send an email to Pascal saying: "YOU BETTER SHUT ANGIE DOWN BEFORE SHE MAKES IT VERY HARD FOR DAVID TO DO JOBS."

More email messages of Rudin and Pascal arguing over the Steve Jobs film is also available on the blog. Eventually Sony passed on  Jobs, which is now being developed by Universal Pictures.

5. But back to Angelina…

Rudin’s "minimlly talented spoilt brat" comment about Jolie came over her involvement in Cleopatra, which Rudin described as a "$180m ego bath" for Jolie.

He continued in an email rant to Pascal: "I’m not destroying my career over a minimally talented spoiled brat who thought nothing of shoving this off her plate for eighteen months so she could go direct a movie."

He added: "She’s a camp event and a celebrity and that’s all and the last thing anybody needs is to make a giant bomb with her that any fool could see coming.

"We will end up being the laughing stock of our industry and we will deserve it, which is so clearly where this is headed that I cannot believe we are still wasting our time with it."

Yowch.

6. The ‘Spider-Man’ franchise

Yes, information and discussions regarding Sony’s Spider-Man franchise were also leaked online by the hackers. The Wall Street Journal reported that there were talks between Sony and Marvel where Marvel would produce a "new" Spider-Man trilogy, while Sony would retain "creative control, marketing and distribution rights". The site also reported that Marvel wanted to include Spider-Man in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War – but that the deal eventually fell through.

The Wall Street Journal also reported that an animated Spider-Man film is in development and that it’ll be a comedy film produced by The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
