‘Joker’ Predicted to Beat Box Office Record for R-Rated Film
Comic book film “Joker” is set to become the highest grossing R-rated film of all time, proving that it takes one joker to displace another.
The DC comics film – based on the Batman character, the Joker – has raked in $737.5 million so far, and is predicted to make over $900 million in global ticket sales in its theatrical run, to beat out the $783.1 million made by the movie adaption of Marvel Comics’ “Deadpool”.
The only market that has yet to be factored in is China, and “Joker” is expected to do some serious trick-or-treating in the region.
The controversial film depicts the origins of Batman’s arch-nemesis, the Joker. It stars Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role as Arthur Fleck, a disenfranchised standup comedian who is largely forgotten by society and turns to a life of violence and crime.
The Todd Phillips flick has enjoyed high praise for its dark tone and how it connects to the DC comics universe, and Phoenix’s portrayal of the maniacal comic has received critical acclaim.
