Johnny Clegg Buried in Private Funeral

July 19, 2019

Legendary South African singer Johnny Clegg was laid to rest in a private funeral held at Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg, on Wednesday afternoon, 17 July.

The “Cruel, Crazy Beautiful World” hitmaker – affectionately called the “White Zulu” – succumbed to a 3-year battle with pancreatic cancer the day before.

Despite being diagnosed in 2015, he continued to tour and perform across the globe.

The 66-year-old musician’s family requested their privacy be respected during this difficult time, and held a small ceremony to celebrate the life of the South African icon, which was attended by his family and some band members.

Roddy Quin, Clegg’s manager, said: “[Johnny Clegg] leaves deep footprints in the hearts of every person that considers him/herself to be an African. He showed us what it was to assimilate to, and embrace other cultures without losing your identity.”

Clegg is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jenny, and their two sons, Jesse and Jaron.

Quin said that details of a public memorial service will be released soon.
