Jay-Z’s Team Roc Intervenes in Ahmaud Arbery Case

May 11, 2020

The Ahmaud Arbery case just got some much-needed back-up in the form of Jay-Z’s social justice arm, Team Roc, calling on officials in the USA’s Georgia state to fast-track action on resolving the explosive legal proceedings.

On 23 February, Ahmaud Arbery – an unarmed 25-year-old black man – was reportedly jogging along a road nearby the community of Brunswick, Georgia, when he was gunned down by two men – father Gregory McMichael, and his son, Travis – in a pick-up truck.

The murder suspects claimed that Arbery matched the description of an at-large robber from the area.

On Sunday, 10 May, Team Roc published a letter titled “We are all Ahmaud Arbery” in a local newspaper, which is directed at state officials.

The letter – signed by celebrities such as Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Meek Mill and Yo Gotti – claims that District Attorney, Tom Durden, should be recused from the case, as there is a conflict of interest since one of the murder-accused was a former police officer.

It strongly suggests that Attorney General Christopher Carr be appointed a special prosecutor to ensure a fair trial.

The letter also calls for the charging of neighbour William Bryan, who filmed the entire incident, as an armed accomplice.

An investigation was launched by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation last week.
