Italy: Schools and Universities Shut Down Amid Virus Fears

March 05, 2020

Italian authorities have closed all schools and universities in order to halt the spread of the coronavirus within its borders, a government source claimed on Thursday, 5 March.

The Mediterranean nation has been the worst hit by the coronavirus pandemic, especially in its northern regions; the affliction has heavily affected the wealthy and populous areas of Lombardy around Milan, as well as neighbours Veneto and Emilia Romagna.

The government has also temporarily banned fans from attending sporting events, and all sports will be played behind closed doors until 3 April – including both the Serie A football competition and the Six Nations rugby tournament.

Education minister, Lucia Azzolina, declared that the shutdown will remain in effect until 15 March.

She stated: “I know it’s a decision with an impact. As education minister, I obviously want my students back in school as soon as possible.”

At least 107 Italian citizens have died from the disease, and 3 089 others have been infected.
