Italy Motorway Bridge Collapses, Scores Feared Dead
A motorway bridge collapsed on Tuesday morning over the Northern Italian port city of Genoa, killing dozens of people, according to local sources.
The local fire brigade said the Morandi Bridge collapsed close to midday during heavy rainfall, sending dozens of vehicles crashing into down into the riverbed and two warehouses below.
The motorway links Southern France with Italy and was built on the A10 toll motorway in the 1960s.
The disaster has resulted in an angry response and raised concerns about crumbling infrastructure throughout the country, along with EU budget constraints.
Emergency services are still clearing the debris but Genoa police put the death toll at 39 as of today, 37 have been identified. 16 people are being treated in hospital with 12 in serious condition. At least three children lost their lives.
