January 06, 2020

Six German tourists have died and 11 others were injured after a suspected drunk driver crashed into them at a village in the Italian Alps.

The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday morning, 5 January, in Luttach – a mountain village and popular skiing destination located in northern Italy’s South Tyrol province.

According to reports, the group of tourists had arrived at their hotel after spending the evening at a nightclub. Upon stepping off a shuttle bus, a speeding vehicle – identified as an Audi TT – struck them.

Staff members from the nearby Adler Hotel, who administered first aid and called for emergency services, described the scene as a “tragedy”.

Over a hundred firefighters, health personnel and police officers arrived shortly afterwards. The injured tourists were taken to hospitals in South Tyrol and Innsbruck, Austria, for treatment.

Meanwhile, an unidentified 28-year-old man from the nearby village of Chienes was arrested. He is currently being held in hospital, where tests revealed that his blood alcohol level was four times the legal limit.
