Israel-Palestine Conflict Overshadows UEFA Match

August 05, 2025

Several political officials and activist groups have expressed concern regarding the UEFA Europa Conference League match-up between Hamrun Spartans and Maccabi Tel Aviv F.C. tonight, Tuesday 5 August.

Playing at the Ta’ Qali National Stadium in Ta’ Qali, Malta, local team Hamrun will take on Israel-based team, Tel Aviv, in the third qualifying round of the tournament’s first leg.

However, due to the ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel, many have expressed their apprehension about UEFA allowing teams hailing from the latter country to participate in their tournaments.

In particular, tonight’s game has sparked widespread safety and ethical concerns. The Palestine Solidarity Movement, an activist group, has urged the Maltese government to intervene, citing Israel’s current human rights crimes and the history of violence associated with Tel Aviv supporters at matches.

Fadi Hanania, a Palestinian ambassador to Malta, has also voiced his thoughts on sports organisations like UEFA that allow Israeli athletes to compete in international sporting events during this turbulent time.

“Football is meant to unite people, not to mask atrocities or normalise the destruction of an entire nation’s future,” Hanania said in a recent interview with a Maltese media outlet.

“To allow Israel to participate without accountability raises serious questions about double standards and undermines the moral foundations of international sport.”
